The Earth Awards have announced a call for entries by May 10, 2010.   These global awards are searching for creative design innovations that will “change the way we live and pave the way to imminent sustainable revolution.”

Last year, the awards were first held in New York City and will be hosted in other major cities around the world to promote its “mission of bringing ecological thinking into popular culture.”

A panel of creative thinkers will serve as members of  the Selection Committee to judge the awards.  In 2010, The Earth Awards will  travel to London.

The competition is accepting design submissions in six categories:

  • Built Environment
  • Fashion
  • Products
  • Systems
  • Future
  • Social Justice

All ideas, great or small, realized or prototypes, will be considered in six criteria: Achievable, Scalable, Measurable, Useful, Original and Ecological.   The Earth Awards grand prize winner will receive $50,000 and category winners $10,000 each.

The Selection Committee will review a shortlist of six finalists, from May 17 – July 23, 2010, resulting with an exhibition in sustainable design.  The Financial Times will hold a Sustainable Business Conference and gala dinner inviting CEOs, entrepreneurs and venture capitalists to match innovation with investment.

Reports indicate an estimated 300 million pairs of shoes end up in U.S. landfills annually while 300+ million children internationally don’t own shoes.

So Nashville-based Soles4Souls collects shoes from warehouses of footwear companies and gently worn shoes from U.S. consumers and distributes these shoes around the world.

Since 2005, Soles4Souls has given away over 7 million pairs of new and gently worn shoes in 125 countries, including Haiti, Kenya, Nepal and the United States.

Recently,Soles4Souls announced a partnership with U.S. mall and shopping center owner/developer CBL Properties.  U.S. shoppers across the country can donate their shoes at select malls before buying new ones in the month-long campaign ending on Earth Day.

“This initiative will not only help put shoes on the feet of the millions worldwide who need them, but it also furthers the global effort to reuse,” says Wayne Elsey, founder and CEO of Soles4Souls.

Called the “green architecture of the future”, a carbon-free village of bioclimatic homes is being launched on Tenerife.

The Institute of Technology and Renewable Energies (ITER), founded by the Tenerife Island Government, is showcasing the village of bioclimatic homes on Friday, March 19, 2010.  Opening to the public in September 2010, these innovative houses generate zero carbon emissions.

Situated in the southern district of Granadilla, the village consists of 25 bioclimatic houses and a visitor centre made from ecological resources.   They are self-sufficient homes and do not use external energy sources.

Says Tenerife Tourism Corporation:

“Testament to Tenerife’s commitment to responsible tourism, the project aims to encourage sustainable practices throughout the tourism industry and interaction with the local culture via the rental of the houses and visitors centre, which has a selection of rooms and a spacious auditorium for training, talks and conferences.”
