Florida’s Easy As One

April 30th, 2010

Florida Department of Environmental Protection has launched a new awareness campaign, “Easy As One – Ordinary Actions, Extraordinary Results,” to motivate Floridians to be environmentally responsible everyday.

Says Florida Governor Charlie Crist:

“Floridians may think that to protect the environment they must make drastic changes to their everyday routines, but this is just not true. Protecting the environment can be as easy as recycling plastic bags, buying energy-efficient products or using available alternative energy sources.”

As part of the Easy As One campaign, new environmental awareness programs have been launched by DEP in partnership with Lamar Advertising, the Florida Retail Federation, the Florida Recycling Partnership, Recycle Florida Today and the American Chemistry Council.

Lamar Advertising will install 1,300+ solar and wind-powered billboards and has launched the site RenewableFlorida.org to educate consumers on alternative energy uses.

OSRAM SYLVANIA COMPACT FLUORESCENT LIGHT BULB

Did you know the modern compact fluorescent (CFL) light bulb is turning 25 this year?

Modern CFL inventor Alfred Wacker and SYLVANIA CFL expert Alfred LaSpina will host a live Twitter chat @SYLVANIA on Thursday April 15, 12:00 noon – 12:15 p.m. ET. You will be able to follow on Twitter using the hashtag #CFLBDay.

On April 17, 1985 in Hannover, Germany, the stick-shaped CFL first saved energy and replaced a standard incandescent light bulb.

Says Alfred LaSpina, spokesperson, OSRAM SYLVANIA:

“The CFL has only improved with age. Today, the SYLVANIA Living Spaces CFL is half the size of our 1985 model, provides better light quality and lasts twice as long, while still delivering 75 percent energy savings.”

Canada Cleaning Up Its Shorelines

April 13th, 2010

Lost Lake, Whistler, BC.

Canadians are getting organized to clean up the shorelines in their communities.  It’s called the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup, September 18-26, 2010, and it’s taking place across Canada.

Registration is now open for the annual Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup. From Resolute to Richmond, Tofino to Truro, there are shorelines in every Canadian community.   A shoreline can be a riverbank, beach, lakefront or wetland.

Canada has the longest shoreline of any country on Earth and the cleanup contributes to the Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup.

In 2009, some 160,000+ kg of litter was removed along Canada’s shorelines during the cleanup.  Common objects found were cigarette butts, food wrappers and plastic bags.  There were also unusual items like the mannequin wearing a bathing suit, a hot air balloon basket and a bathroom sink.

Say event organizers:

“We invite all Canadians to become conservation champions by taking an active role in cleaning up a shoreline in your community.  Participation helps ensure safer environments for aquatic life and contributes to preserving natural aquatic habitats.”

For info and registration, visit the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup website.
