How To Change A Mother’s Life

May 6th, 2010

PlaneterraEcotourismssustainable travel-2

How can you change a life this Mother’s Day, May 9, 2010?

Make a monetary donation to a micro-credit fund to honor mothers worldwide for Mother’s Day, suggests Planeterra Foundation, a global non-profit dedicated to sustainable community development.

Micro-finance loans to women can help improve a family’s quality of life, says the foundation.  A gift of $50 can help a mother start her own business and change her family’s life.

The foundation partners with other organizations to provide micro-finance loans for women to establish small businesses and life skills training and health and human rights education. The program is a way out of poverty for the borrowers who learn skills, succeed and pay back their loans.

How To Green Your Christmas

December 8th, 2009

How can you green your Christmas and reduce your carbon footprint this holiday season?

Wake Forest University Director of Sustainability Dedee DeLongpre Johnston offers these excellent green Christmas tips:

Use sustainable gift-wrap.  “Consider saving and re-using holiday wrapping paper just as your grandmother once did. Or wrap your gifts in pretty fabric that can be used for other purposes.”

Decorate with energy-efficient lighting. “While many people still use standard incandescent holiday bulbs, decorative LED lights are now available in a variety of holiday shapes and colors. In addition to having a much longer lifespan than standard lights, LEDs also reduce fire risks because they stay cool to the touch.”

Give consumable gifts. “Most of us don’t need any more stuff, or as DeLongpre Johnston points out, we’re all “stuffed out.” So consider giving the gift of services instead, or goods that can be consumed. Some ideas include massages, pedicures, tickets to sporting events, gift certificates for restaurants and other similar pampering treats. Other options would be to give consumable gifts that keep on giving all year long like a membership to a Wine of the Month Club or a monthly delivery of seasonal fruits grown locally.”

Fancy becoming a green wedding planner?

Now, there’s an online course for wedding professionals called Green Wedding Planning Certification from The Wedding Planning Institute.

Kate Harrison, founder of The Green Bride Guide and author of  The Green Bride Guide: How to Create an Earth-Friendly Wedding on Any Budget, wrote and teaches the four-week online course.   The course will teach wedding professionals how to incorporate eco-friendly wedding solutions into their clients’ events to lower costs and save the environment.

Says Kate Harrison:

“There are over two million weddings a year in the United States and an average of 150 guests per wedding. The environmental impact of the wedding industry is tremendous. With 45% of couples looking for green options this year, it has never been more important for wedding professionals to understand the environmental impacts of weddings.”

After publishing The Green Bride Guide, Harrison launched the site to help eco-conscious couples connect with local resources and to create a community where they can share pictures, stories and ideas with each other.
