Like many parents, Kelly Lester was concerned about her family’s lunch nutrition but wanted to spend as little time as possible in the kitchen.

So the American mom created the EasyLunchBoxes system of compartmentalized food storage containers and cooler bag.  Recently, Lester sent seeking greener review samples of her containers and cooler bag.

We tested the EasyLunchBoxes while traveling and found them easy-to-use and portable.  They are ideal for waste-free school or work lunches or travel snacks on-the-road.

The company says the lunch boxes are made of non-toxic, food safe polypropylene (PP) and they are BPA-, PVC- and phthalate-free.

How To Green Your Christmas

December 8th, 2009

How can you green your Christmas and reduce your carbon footprint this holiday season?

Wake Forest University Director of Sustainability Dedee DeLongpre Johnston offers these excellent green Christmas tips:

Use sustainable gift-wrap.  “Consider saving and re-using holiday wrapping paper just as your grandmother once did. Or wrap your gifts in pretty fabric that can be used for other purposes.”

Decorate with energy-efficient lighting. “While many people still use standard incandescent holiday bulbs, decorative LED lights are now available in a variety of holiday shapes and colors. In addition to having a much longer lifespan than standard lights, LEDs also reduce fire risks because they stay cool to the touch.”

Give consumable gifts. “Most of us don’t need any more stuff, or as DeLongpre Johnston points out, we’re all “stuffed out.” So consider giving the gift of services instead, or goods that can be consumed. Some ideas include massages, pedicures, tickets to sporting events, gift certificates for restaurants and other similar pampering treats. Other options would be to give consumable gifts that keep on giving all year long like a membership to a Wine of the Month Club or a monthly delivery of seasonal fruits grown locally.”

AnvilKnitwear490B Light Blue OM product Track My Eco FashionAnvil Knitwear has launched an interactive website that chronicles  the journey and environmental impact of a t-shirt, from cotton-seed to consumer.

The TrackMyT.com site specifically tracks t-shirts for youth ages two to 12.  It  allows users to explore cotton farms, a gin and spinners and Anvil’s textile mill, cut and sew plants, and distribution facility.  To access this information, they input a unique tracking number printed on their shirt.

Designed for kids and adults, the site features surprise pop-up messages and graphics and lesson plans for teachers that focus on the environmental, historical and social aspects of manufacturing, buying and owning a t-shirt.

TrackMyT.com is a response to the recent U.S. Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, which this year required manufacturers of children’s products to provide labels allowing consumers to trace the product’s history.

GreenMattresses2OMI - Terra

Are you shopping for a greener mattress?  California company Organic Mattresses, Inc., (OMI) has launched OrganicPedic, a  line of mattresses crafted with organic cotton, natural wool and natural rubber.  All OMI products are produced in an organic mattress factory which is smoke-free, chemical-free and fragrance-free.

The adult-sized mattresses have received the  GREENGUARD and LEED certifications, granted to products that meet low-VOC emission standards.  An ozone sanitation chamber promises to protect against potential contamination from molds, yeasts, and bacteria.

OrganicPedic®  queen-size mattresses range from $1595 USD for the Sierra to $4395 USD for the Terra.  The company also makes bedding accessories and pillows,  like the Eco-wool-wrapped 100% natural Shredded Rubber Pillow and the Wooly Lite pillow top.

OMI says the cotton used is grown in Texas and the wool humanely sheared from Northern California sheep reared organically without antibiotics or hormones.

The wood used in their wood-slat and box spring foundations, the company says, has been certified by the Forest Stewardship Council and the 100% natural rubber latex is sustainably harvested from tropical rubber tress and manufactured into cores in the USA.

Hickory Springs has launched a nationwide search for six U.S. contestants to compete in its first “EarthCare Challenge” for a chance to win $5,000 in eco-friendly home furnishings.

This contest will chronicle the challenges of six contestants aspiring to live more sustainable lifestyles.  EarthCare Challenge will take place on social networking communities Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and EarthCareInside.com.  The contest will promote Hickory Spring’s line of EarthCare eco-friendly components for upholstered furniture.

Says Hickory Springs Executive Vice President Dwayne Welch:

“Through the contest we believe many consumers will see how they can improve not only their own lifestyles but their quality of life overall.  We think it’s an important step from the home furnishings industry, which traditionally hasn’t been one of the leading industries to show all that it has done to become eco-friendly. The EarthCare Challenge is a chance to share real experiences within a community that we’re creating with our partners in the furnishings industry, and where consumers can learn how to make more sustainable choices in their everyday lives.”

Fancy becoming a green wedding planner?

Now, there’s an online course for wedding professionals called Green Wedding Planning Certification from The Wedding Planning Institute.

Kate Harrison, founder of The Green Bride Guide and author of  The Green Bride Guide: How to Create an Earth-Friendly Wedding on Any Budget, wrote and teaches the four-week online course.   The course will teach wedding professionals how to incorporate eco-friendly wedding solutions into their clients’ events to lower costs and save the environment.

Says Kate Harrison:

“There are over two million weddings a year in the United States and an average of 150 guests per wedding. The environmental impact of the wedding industry is tremendous. With 45% of couples looking for green options this year, it has never been more important for wedding professionals to understand the environmental impacts of weddings.”

After publishing The Green Bride Guide, Harrison launched the site to help eco-conscious couples connect with local resources and to create a community where they can share pictures, stories and ideas with each other.
